Things I Asked the Night

Khalia gazes with wonder at a clear celestial night sky filled with stars, a glowing full Moon and a bright passing comet.
I looked up and found more questions than answers. The Moon glowed, the stars seemed endless, and a comet crossed my sky before disappearing into the unknown. I think not knowing makes it even more beautiful.

Hello. I invite you to stay beneath the stars with me awhile so we can wonder together.

🌙 I Looked Up and Started Wondering

Some nights make it impossible for me to look away. When the sky is beautifully clear and the Moon is shining above me, I find myself staring for far longer than I intended. Then I notice the stars—hundreds at first, then seemingly thousands as my eyes adjust to the darkness. Before long, my mind is filling with questions.

How far away are they really? How long has their light been travelling before it reaches my eyes? And when a comet suddenly crosses that enormous sky, I cannot help following it. Where has it been? Where is it going? Will somebody else, somewhere far from me, look up tonight and wonder exactly the same things?

✨ Small Beneath Something Enormous

Celestial skies make me feel wonderfully small, but never insignificant. I can stand beneath them knowing that the universe stretches farther than I could ever imagine, and somehow that thought brings me peace. The Moon looks close enough to reach for, especially when its light shimmers across the water, while the stars appear as tiny points scattered through the darkness.

About halfway through all that wondering, this free verse poem began forming in my mind. I wanted to capture the curiosity, awe and quiet humility I feel when I look upward. My everyday worries seem smaller beneath a sky like this. For a little while, I forget about everything except how extraordinary it is simply to be here and able to see it.

☄️ Questions I Don't Need Answered

The Moon feels familiar to me because I know I can look for it again. The stars seem almost timeless, shining across distances my mind struggles to comprehend. A comet feels different. It arrives unexpectedly, crosses my little piece of sky and continues somewhere my eyes cannot follow. I think that is what fascinates me most.

I have so many questions about everything above me, yet I don't feel any urgency to answer them all. I love learning about nature, but I also love allowing a little mystery to remain. Sometimes I simply want to stand beneath the night sky, tilt my head upwards and wonder. Perhaps not knowing is part of the beauty. The sky keeps its mysteries, and I get to keep asking questions.

✨ Things I Asked the Night

Free verse poem by Khalia Wildawn

I looked up
and immediately had too many questions.

How can the Moon hang there
so calmly,
wearing all that borrowed light
as though the darkness belongs to her?

She looks close tonight.
Close enough to fool me.

But then I find the stars,
and distance loses all meaning.

How far did your light travel
just to reach my eyes?

Did it cross all that darkness
before I was even born?

Am I seeing you now,
or meeting something you used to be?

I keep looking
until the sky feels deeper than sky,

and then—

a comet.

Bright, sudden, beautiful,
racing through everything I cannot understand.

Where have you been?

What have you passed
that no human eyes have ever seen?

And where are you going
after you leave mine?

I don't know.

Perhaps that is why I keep looking up—

because how could a sky holding so many questions
ever stop being beautiful?
