I still remember the desert shimmering before me, beautiful and endless, until the fierce heat made me wonder which things were real and which were only illusions dancing across the golden sand. |
Hello from beneath the desert sun.
When the Sand Began to Speak is about an experience in the desert that has never really left me. I remember being overwhelmed by its beauty at first—the endless golden dunes, the enormous blue sky, and the way the sunlight seemed to make every grain of sand glow. There was something extraordinary about standing somewhere so open, silent and seemingly untouched.
But the beauty came with a harsher side. As the day grew hotter, the air above the sand began to shimmer and distort everything in the distance. I saw water that wasn't there and shapes that seemed real until I moved closer. Those strange moments stayed with me and eventually found their way into my poetry, because I wanted to capture what it felt like when the desert began blurring the line between what was real and what only seemed to be.
That was when the experience became frightening. Sounds seemed to come from nowhere, shadows appeared where nobody stood, and my tired mind began turning the desert into something almost dreamlike. I remember the fear of realising I couldn't completely trust what I was seeing or hearing. The desert suddenly felt enormous, powerful and strangely alive around me.
Even now, the memory remains incredibly vivid. I can still imagine that burning sky and trembling horizon. Strangely, the fear never erased the beauty. If anything, it made me respect the desert more deeply—a beautiful place capable of wonder, deception and danger all at once. I wanted this poem to hold onto that contradiction, and to remember the strange moment when the sand seemed to speak to me..
When the Sand Began to Speak
I remember how the desert burned with beauty,
gold spilling farther than my eyes could follow,
each dune shaped softly by an unseen hand,
each grain holding a fragment of the sun.
The sky was impossibly blue above me,
and nothing moved but the wandering wind.
Even the silence seemed beautiful then,
vast enough to swallow every thought I carried.
But noon came down like fire,
and the horizon began to tremble.
Heat rose in shimmering curtains,
bending the world into things I wanted to believe.
I saw water where no water waited,
silver and blue beneath impossible trees.
I walked toward it until it vanished,
leaving only sand beneath my aching feet.
Then the desert began to speak.
My name drifted somewhere behind me,
soft as a voice I almost remembered,
and shadows walked where no one stood.
I saw green leaves trembling in the distance,
felt phantom rain cooling my burning skin,
and for one frightened moment I wondered
if the desert had found its way inside my mind.
I stopped trusting my eyes.
I stopped trusting the voices on the wind.
Still, beneath the fear, I saw its beauty—
the terrible gold, the endless burning sky.
Even now, I dream of those silent dunes,
and wonder what the sand was trying to tell me.
