Greetings from where the forest blooms!
The Forest Wore Flowers came to me while I was walking along a little path through a tropical forest. Everywhere I looked, there seemed to be another splash of colour hiding among all that green—bright flowers beside the ferns, orchids resting on mossy branches, and tiny blooms almost hidden beneath enormous leaves.
I found myself walking more and more slowly, taking it all in, and before long I knew there was a poem somewhere among those flowers waiting for me to find it. What inspired the poem most was the thought that none of those flowers needed me to admire them. They would have bloomed just as beautifully if I had never wandered down that path at all.
Nature doesn’t decorate itself for us, and perhaps that is part of what makes finding these moments feel so special. I love that poetry lets me carry a little piece of a moment like this home with me. The flowers didn’t need me to find them, but that morning, I felt very lucky that I did.
The Forest Wore Flowers
I followed a path where the green grew deep,
beneath a roof of leaves,
where sunlight slipped through tiny spaces
and scattered gold around my feet.
The forest wore flowers that morning—
scarlet tucked among the ferns,
yellow blazing like little suns,
and purple climbing through the trees.
I wondered who had chosen the colours,
then smiled at such a silly thought.
Nature never asks what matches.
She simply makes things beautiful.
A butterfly wandered beside me,
drifting wherever the blossoms called,
while somewhere beyond the tangled vines
a hidden bird sang to the rain.
I walked more slowly after that,
afraid I might hurry past a wonder—
an orchid resting on a mossy branch,
a tiny bloom beneath a giant leaf.
Perhaps these flowers never needed me
to stop and tell them they were lovely.
But I was glad I found their path,
and even gladder they found mine.
