High above the noise of the world, I watched the sun turn the mountains to gold and found a little peace in the silence that seemed to stretch on forever. |
Welcome to a breath of crisp mountain air.
I wrote this poem after standing high in the snowy mountains and watching the first sunlight reach across the peaks. Everything below felt so far away, and up there the world seemed almost impossibly quiet. I was struck by how something so enormous could feel so peaceful.
The poem is about that moment of being alone with nature, when the noise of everything else disappears and the things weighing on your heart begin to feel a little less heavy. There was something about standing among those enormous mountains that changed the way I looked at what I was carrying inside me. My sadness hadn’t disappeared, and nothing I had lost was suddenly returned to me, but for a little while I didn’t feel as though I had to understand it or find a way to make it better.
I could simply stand there and feel it.
The cold air against my face, the untouched snow beneath the morning light, and those distant peaks stretching farther than I could see made everything else seem very small. Yet strangely, I didn’t feel small in a frightening way. I felt like I belonged to that quiet moment, even if it would only last for a little while.
That solitude became comforting. There were no voices telling me what I should feel and nothing demanding my attention. There was only the mountain, the snow, the sky and the slow arrival of another day.
I think that is what this poem is really about: solitude, loss, and the unexpected comfort nature can give us when we are carrying something difficult. The mountains couldn’t take my sadness away, but they gave me somewhere beautiful to hold it.
And as the first sunlight touched the snowy peaks, somehow what had felt unbearably heavy below seemed just a little lighter up there.
Edge of Heaven and Earth
Above the world, the heavy murmurs die,
Leaving a kingdom carved in brilliant white.
She stands alone beneath an empty sky,
Drank in the silence of the blinding light.
No crowded streets, no rushing, hurried pace,
Just jagged stone and drifts of frozen lace.
A sea of peaks extends in quiet grace,
To meet the borders of infinite space.
Then, bleeding gold across the frozen crest,
The rising sun ignites the sleeping spires.
It warms the shadows on the mountain's breast,
And turns the lonely snow to amber fires.
How strange that grandeur acts so small and still,
A simple line where earth and heaven meet.
The wind blows sharp across the lonely hill,
Yet peace is settled softly at her feet.
The cold expanse seeps deep beneath her skin,
A beautiful and breathtaking distress;
The ghost of all she lost dissolves within
The hollow weight of absolute stillness.
In this cold height, where quiet winds endure,
She stands undone, as solitary and pure
